What causes hair to be curly?
Curly or wavy hair is determined by genetics. In straight hair, the hair follicle (where the hair grows from) is round. Whereas with curly hair, the hair follicle is oval shaped. As the hair cuticle builds up from the follicle, cells divide and proteins are created asymmetrically resulting in some parts get built up more and others less.
Think of ribbon used for gift wrapping, as you stretch one side and compress the other, it gives a curl or a wave. With wave and curly hair there are parts of the cuticle that are more exposed, this is what makes hair stand up and become frizzy.
What is the best way to care for curly hair?
